Health Sciences Course Offerings:
Jr High Intro to Health Occupations (Grade 8 | No Credit | Prerequisites: None)
Exploratory introduction to healthcare careers with a focus on the human body, disease processes, and general medical practices. Students explore technical skills and gain an overview of health-related occupations through immersive experiences. This course is designed specifically for 8th graders attend Brixner Jr. High.
Introduction to Health Occupations (Grades 9-12 | 0.5 Credit | Prerequisites: None)
Explore healthcare careers with a focus on the human body, disease processes, and general medical practices. Students develop technical skills and gain an overview of health-related occupations through immersive experiences.
Nutrition and Wellness (Grades 9-12 | 0.5 Credit | Dual Credit: HPE 225, KCC | Prerequisites: None)
Learn the role of nutrition, wellness, fitness, and mental health in overall well-being. This course encourages students to set personal health goals and understand the importance of a balanced lifestyle.
First Aid & Beyond (Grades 10-12 | 0.5 Credit | Dual Credit: HEA 252, KCC | Prerequisites: None)
Gain certifications in CPR/AED and Wilderness First Aid. This course focuses on emergency medical skills, including airway obstruction, bleeding control, spinal immobilization, and infection control.
Sports Medicine (Grades 10-12 | 0.5 Credit | Dual Credit: HPE 131, KCC | Prerequisite: Introduction to Health Occupations)
Develop skills for careers in athletic training, physical therapy, and fitness training. Topics include taping, bandaging, injury prevention, treatment methods, and basic anatomy.
Advanced Sports Medicine (Grades 11-12 | 0.5 Credit | Dual Credit: HPE 260 & 261, KCC | Prerequisite: Sports Medicine)
Earn NASM Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) certification. This course covers advanced injury assessment, rehabilitation, and the care of athletes, focusing on topics like sports psychology and performance enhancement.
Health Occupations I (Grades 11-12 | 1.0 Credit | Dual Credit: MDA 101/102, KCC | Prerequisite: Introduction to Health Occupations)
Explore current trends in healthcare with guest speakers and clinical rotations. Students learn infection control, medical ethics, and patient care while gaining hands-on experience in medical settings.
Health Occupations II (Grades 12 | 1.0 Credit | Dual Credit: HEA 110, KCC | Prerequisite: Health Occupations I)
Earn Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. Taught by a registered nurse, this class provides immersive clinical experiences, preparing students to take the Oregon CNA exam.
Medical Assisting Pre-Apprenticeship (Grade 12 | 1.0 Credit | Prerequisite: Health Occupations I)
Prepare for a career as a medical assistant through clinical rotations and hands-on experiences. Students gain real-world skills in medical assisting, with hours applied toward a formal apprenticeship.
Lifetime Health & Fitness (Grades 11-12 | 0.5 Credit | Dual Credit: HPE 295, KCC | Prerequisite: Nutrition and Wellness or Health I)
Learn about fitness, stress management, nutrition, and sexual health. This course emphasizes the importance of staying active and making healthy life choices.
