Oct. 12, 2022 / Students at Henley and Ferguson elementary schools sampled Crenshaw melons from Maranatha Farm as part of the district’s Farm to School program. The taste tests events were conducted by KCSD FoodCorps service members, Isaac Reid and Ty Andrews. Henley Elementary, with Ty’s help, served the melon samples to all students during lunchtime, and Isaac delivered an educational lesson on melons and tasting to all fourth-grade classes at Ferguson.
“Taste tests are a great way to introduce new menu items and get students excited to try healthy foods at school,” said Jennifer Detwiler, KCSD’s food services supervisor. “They give students voice and choice, and survey results can be used to improve recipes and create school meals that students want to eat.”
This is the second time in a month that Maranatha Farm, owned by Mary Ann and John Anderson of Klamath Falls, has provided farm fresh food to district cafeterias. Last month, students enjoyed watermelon and cucumbers from the local farm.
Maranatha Farm sells their produce at the Farmers Market in downtown Klamath Falls. Mary Ann recalled two parents who came to Saturday’s Farmers Market specifically to buy the farm’s Crenshaw melons. “Their kids told them they were the best melons they ever had,” she said.
