March 11, 2023 / Five KCSD robotics teams – three from Mazama, one from Henley High, and a middle school team from Lost River -- that qualified for Worlds March 11 during the 2023 Regional VRC/VEX Robotics Championships at Mazama High School. More than 60 teams from around the state competed in the day-long tournament. Of those, 11 qualified for the world championships.
Following is information about the KCSD teams that qualified for the 2023 VEX Robotics World Championships.
In the middle school competition:
• The Lost River team of Emily Howard, Joselyn Hernandez, and Jorge Juan Hernandez Aguilera were named state champions, winning the tournament as part of an alliance with a team from Salem. Both teams qualified for Worlds.
In the high school competition, 11 teams qualified for Worlds by winning making the tournament finals or winning a qualifying award.
• Mazama team 5686Z: James Donahue and Gage Bordelon. In an alliance with a team from Vale, James and Gage were in the final championship match. Two allied teams from The Dalles took home the tournament trophy. As tournament finalists, James and Gage qualified for Worlds.
• Mazama team 5686 E: Alex Lehman, Stephen Hantzmon, James Ferguson, Emerson Metcalf and Matthew Elfbrandt. The team qualified for Worlds by winning the Think Award trophy.
• Mazama team 5686 G: Mark Elfbrandt, Diego Diaz, Thack Moreland, Will Hawkins. The team qualified for Worlds by winning the Build Award.
• Henley team 3017K: Kaylee Haddox, Alana Smith, Caleb Nejely, Lauren Wilkinson. The team qualified by winning the Innovate Award.
