SIA funds purchase 220 new microscopes
March 17, 2022 / New microscopes -- 220 of them -- were delivered Thursday to junior high and high school science classrooms, improving hands-on learning opportunities and increasing access to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs for students.
KCSD science teachers, who were meeting for a training at Mazama High School, helped unload and distribute the microscopes for delivery to their schools.
The district used Student Investment Account funds to make the purchases. The new microscopes replace outdated and broken-down equipment and will provide more opportunities for students.
“This will dramatically improve our microscope lab experiences,” said Laura Nickerson, a STEM teacher at Mazama High School. “Many of the schools have had five or six students sharing a single microscope and now that number will be two students at most. These microscopes also offer a higher power of magnification and new features not available on our old microscopes.”
Jeff Bullock, KCSD’s school improvement director, said the purchase is in line with the district’s goals.
“The more we can engage students with hands-on learning and quality instruction, the better the outcomes for our students will be,” he said.
