Students, staff, community celebrate grand opening of new gym
Oct. 4, 2024 / Bonanza students, staff, and community members circled the new gymnasium, united by a 6-inch-wide red ribbon, cheering as they counted down from five. Klamath County School District Superintendent Glen Szymoniak led the countdown. Bonanza administrators Jordan Osborn, Josh Crawford, and Jessica DeLonge and KCSD School Board members Marc Staunton, Jill O’Donnell, and Steve Lowell each with an oversized pair of golden scissors then cut the ribbon, marking the opening of the new facility.
As the crowd cheered, Osborn grinned, holding up a piece of the cut ribbon. “Bonanza knows how to cut a ribbon,” he said. For photos and videos of the event: GRAND OPENING BONANZA GYM
The grand opening celebration Friday (Oct. 4) afternoon celebrated the opening of the new 16,422-square-foot gymnasium, which will host its first event Saturday (Oct. 5), the Antler Classic Volleyball Tournament. The entire student body of both the elementary and junior-senior high school as well as community members filled the bleachers for the event.
After a welcome by Bonanza Jr/Sr High School Principal Jordan Osborn, attendees watched a nearly two-minute time-lapse video featuring day-to-day progress of the year-long construction. Speakers included Osborn, Superintendent Szymoniak, and school board members. Special thanks was given to the lead contractor Brian Kinsman of Kinsman Construction as well as all the subcontractors and the KCSD Maintenance and Project crew that made the project possible. The free-standing building features two full-size courts, locker rooms, a concession area, and seating for more than 800 fans. After the ribbon cutting, community members toured the locker rooms and stopped by the concession area for Antler-themed cupcakes made by our KCSD Food Service team.
Work started on the new gymnasium in August 2023. The lead contractors on the project were Soderstrom Architects and Kinsman Construction. The district used federal ESSER relief funds to pay for construction.
