Mazama parent’s gift upgrades weight room facilities
Jan. 15, 2025 / Thanks to a $25,000 donation from a Mazama High School parent, the school’s weight room received a significant upgrade over winter break, adding new equipment that will greatly enhance students' physical fitness and athletic development.
The donation, made by Jake Juhl on behalf of APE Strength and Conditioning, a local weightlifting and fitness business, enabled the purchase of new flooring, weights, barbells, benches, and six additional weight power racks.
Juhl worked closely with Mazama’s health and weightlifting teacher, Kyson Culp, to determine the best way to support the school’s students and athletes.
“Jake believes in the vision Mazama has for its football program and understands the importance of weightlifting for all athletes,” Culp said. “He asked us what our dream weight room would look like, and then helped us make it a reality.”
Before the renovation, the weight room had a mix of outdated equipment. With the upgrade, the number of stations doubled from six to twelve, allowing the facility to accommodate over 50 students during the popular Zero Period class, which takes place before the regular school day begins. Additionally, students can participate in weight training classes throughout the day. Currently, Culp teaches four weight classes with 140 students enrolled.
“This generous donation is a testament to Mr. Culp and his vision,” said Sergio Cisneros, Mazama’s vice principal. “It’s clear that people want to support him and the positive impact he has on our students. This gift will provide students with the opportunity to develop strength, discipline, and perseverance — both physically and mentally.”
Max Rodgers, a Mazama student-athlete who participates in football, basketball, and baseball, expressed his appreciation for the weight room upgrades. “I’m really glad we made this investment for our school,” he said. “It makes a huge difference. I’m a lot more confident with my lifts using this new equipment.”
The upgraded weight room will be available to students throughout the school year as part of the school’s physical education and extracurricular programs. The new resources will also benefit Mazama’s athletic teams, helping student-athletes prepare for success in a variety of sports.
Mazama Athletic Director Ian O’Brien said the donation reflects the school’s broader effort to enhance its athletic programs and promote student wellness.
“We’re striving to create an environment where every student feels valued,” he said. “This is a gift that supports not only our athletes but the health and fitness goals of all our students.”
