Dear Mazama Community,

Over the last month, staff have worked diligently with district leaders in an attempt to bring all students back for full-time in-person instruction for the fourth quarter.  Unfortunately, we were not successful.  This very difficult decision is disappointing to all of the Mazama staff.

Mazama will be maintaining the current A/B cohort model.  The model will change slightly by bringing the A cohort of freshmen and sophomores in every Friday for another day of in-person instruction.  This means that freshmen and sophomores will attend on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays for the remainder of the year beginning the week of April 12th.  Juniors and seniors will attend on Wednesdays and Thursdays for the remainder of the year.

In full transparency, we felt it important to explain the main rationales and reasons behind this difficult decision.

  • Under this year’s four period cohort model, Mazama has run two simultaneous schedules every quarter because freshmen and sophomores require different levels of courses than juniors and seniors.  As a result, teachers have taught two classes during each period.  While teaching one cohort in-person, the other was distance learning.  To bring every student back full-time, the two master schedules would have to be merged and many classes would be removed.  Many students would not be able to get the second term of their prescheduled year-long courses (e.e. foreign languages, CTE courses, dual credit courses, and/or pathway electives for STEM & M or Jump into Business).  We would also not be able to maintain stable cohorts required by state guidance.  This could potentially mean that one case of COVID could lead to the quarantine of 150 or more students for two weeks at a time.
  • Our cafeteria facilities have designated capacity of 147 students.  The ODE guidance still requires a six-foot distance between students while they eat.  This requirement would necessitate having five half-hour lunches within the day.  It would increase the likelihood of large numbers of students being quarantined for two weeks at a time.
  • A large number of our juniors and seniors have found employment and/or are attending college courses during their distance learning days and indicated they would not return on the additional days.  Many were opting to move to KCSD Online or miss classes if we returned full time.  At the same time, a larger than normal number of freshmen and sophomores have required additional support to pass their courses and not lose credits.  For those reasons, the decision was made to bring freshmen and sophomores back on all Fridays instead of rotating with juniors and seniors during the final quarter.

This model enables us to continue to keep students and staff safe while providing quality instruction and support for our students.  We sincerely apologize that we cannot support full-time attendance and thank you for your continued support, understanding and patience.

Sincerely,

Mazama Administration
