Principals Corner

Student Success Recognized

This school year, student success is measured by their ABG’s – Attendance, Behavior, and Grades. Every six week grading period students can qualify for a “bonus activity” by having; 92% or better attendance, no major behavior referral’s, and no D’s or F’s on their progress report card. Over 30 students qualified following the first six week grading period and were treated to pizza and bowling on Friday, October 27th, in LaPine. This incentive program is all part of the new Positive Behavior System being implemented this year for grades 7 through 12.

Along with the bonus activity each grading period, good attendance is being recognized on a monthly and even daily basis. Each month, the class with the highest attendance percentage will receive a reward of the Principal’s choosing. Also, daily attendance is being recognized by releasing the winning class early to lunch, with the hope that student’s will encourage their classmates to attend school regularly.
The staff at Gilchrist School is dedicated to helping students succeed in school. Programs that “connect” students to their school have been proven effective in promoting that success. If you have any questions regarding any of these programs, feel free to call.

Thank you coaches and players for all of your hard work this season.       Thank you to all the families who have called in, or written notes to let us know that their child will be missing, or has been out absent from school. Calling in helps our office tremendously. Oregon attendance law states there are four reasons a student may be excused from school:
1) student illness 2) serious illness of a student’s immediate family member 3) extreme emergency 4) Principal has pre-approved the absence when satisfactory arrangements are made in advance of the absence. Let’s aim to “Strive for Five”, meaning to set a goal to be absent no more than five times in a school year. We want to partner with you to make on time school attendance a healthy habit for your student.

On October 30th, 2017, students and staff participated in an Earthquake, Evacuation, and Reunification Drill. Students practiced a shelter exercise in an event of an earthquake, then safely evacuated the school to the buses. Students were then transported to a reunification site where students were informed on procedures involving reunification with parents in cases of emergency transport from school campus. Drills such as this one will continue throughout the year as part of the school districts ongoing efforts on school and student safety. As always, the health and safety of our students is a priority. If you have any questions about any of the safety drills, please contact the school.
